Redesigned website goes live

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007 at 7:25 am

Hello - welcome to my website.

On my blog I write about marketing, public relations and digital communications. To keep up-to-date with my posts you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or sign-up to receive blog posts by email.

Thanks for visiting and I hope you find my site useful.

It’s been a busy few evenings as I’ve been working hard to get my new website design live.

You can now see it in all its glory at www.simonwakeman.com.

I wanted to clean up the old design and increase the use of colour. I hope you like it. There are still a few minor display gremlins, but everything should be working as normal.

I’d like to say thanks very much to Andy Wake at Don’t Panic Projects for his help with developing the design and colour scheme - I’m a pretty poor designer so Andy has to take a lot of the credit for how the site now looks.

If you spot anything untoward please do leave me a comment or drop me a line.

Normal blog service will now be resumed!

Love it! Very slick indeed. Is it built entirely on WordPress? Homepage and all?

  • simon

Thanks Stephen - it’s all running using Wordress, although the homepage uses a plug-in to display a non-blog page instead of the usual blog homepage.

  • Stephen Davies

Which plug in is it? Do you mind adding the link?

Learning WordPress is on my ever growing list of things to do. ;)

  • simon

The plug-in’s called Filosofo Home Page Control (http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/home-page-control), although the site seems to be down at the moment.

I have a feeling I saw somewhere that WP2.1 can do what the plug-in does anyway, but as I upgraded from an older version I kept the plug-in and didn’t use the inbuilt functionality.

Looks good - how often do you think a blog needs a fresh new look? Have you noticed any design trends? Or are updates mainly technology driven?

  • Simon Collister

Lovin it! Very understated - the best way. You’re right too (as far as I know) about the upgraded wordpress giving the option of a non-blog page.

  • simon

Simon - thanks for that - glad you like

Heather - a good question. The design is pretty much independent of the technology. My desire to redesign was because I felt the old design was looking tired and too busy - as I’d added more features over time. There are some design trends around “Web 2.0″ - a good article I found when researching is here: http://www.webdesignfromscratch.com/web-2.0-design-style-guide.cfm

Thanks - I’ve just created a private blog for the press fleet administrators in the motor industry PR world and went for a plain, clean look too.

  • Ian Delaney

Hey - good job. Looks very smart indeed. White space is the new blog rock’n'roll.

You’re quite right about WP 2.1 supporting landing pages natively. I’m using that feature for the site I’m making for our summer conference.

  • Nick Tatt

I was wondering why the posts had slowed from their regular pace. All is now clear! Nice work Simon.

  • simon

Ian - thanks for that - glad the work was worth it

Nick - thanks too - normal service hopefully resumed next week; arrival of baby and TalkTalk broadband connection problems permitting!

  • Antonio

    Very nice site! Good work.
